urban decay animal testing in china oPt Urban Decay Is At A Cruelty Free Crossroads

Say it ain’t so !

The makeup company has made a huge deal out of the fact that their products are , even putting the slogan “We don’t do animal testing. How could anyone?” on everything they sell.

Well, now Urban Decay wants to move into the very lucrative Chinese beauty market, but there’s a problem. The Chinese government must run their own tests on products sold in the country, and they utilize animal testing.

The company posted a statement on their Facebook saying:

“We do want to address one FAQ: No, Urban Decay will not test on animals in China. However, the Chinese government may conduct a test using our products before they can be sold there. We absolutely realize that for many of you, it makes no difference who is doing the testing. But, animal rights are still very much important to Urban Decay, and our decision was a thoughtful one.”

However, no one is fooled. They’re basically saying money is more important than animal rights. PETA has gotten involved and written a post entitled “Urban Decay’s Decaying Principles.” There’s also a petition on Change.org urging the company to reconsider.

Urban Decay joins several other companies who have had this problem, including Estee Lauder, Mary Kay, L’Occitane, Yves Rocher and Caudalie.

While we really hope Urban Decay does the right thing here, the good news is that their products are safe, so even if China wants to test little animals, they’ll just be getting mini makeovers.
